Can Augmented Reality Help You Quit Smoking?

An augmented reality system that creates 3D replicas of patients' organs could be used to warn them of their risky lifestyles before it is too late, according to the developer.

Doctors will be able customise the technology for each patient. For instance, to encourage smokers to quit, doctors could visually illustrate the effects of tobacco on the lungs, he added.

Seeing the damage in front of their eyes could then encourage them to give up the deadly habit, which is known to cause cancer.

Developer Dr Ian Williams from Birmingham City University, told MailOnline: 'If you select the lungs, it allows you to interact with the lungs by rotating or enlarging them as if they were in front of you as an actual object.

'If the patient was a smoker you could put a texture to reflect the effects of smoking.'

More about the technology

Dr Williams said: '[The technology is] done on a screen, like seeing yourself on TV stood next to a skeleton or virtual person and you can interact with that person as if it was a model in the real-world.'

The developers believe the system could help to encourage people to change their risky habits by illustrating the potential health effects.

Dr Williams said: 'The real advantages this brings are being able to visually demonstrate parts of the anatomy, using virtual models which can be customised for each patient and show how they have been impacted by lifestyle choices.'

How it may be used in the future

The developers hope the technology will one day be able to demonstrate to patients what is involved in an upcoming medical procedure by 'playing it out' beforehand.
