NVIDIA CloudXR Streaming Coming To AWS Early 2021

Using CloudXR via Amazon AWS, NVIDIA is providing a cloud streaming solution for AR and VR, initially in early access for business customers. CloudXR will be more widely available from early next year.


The CloudXR service on Amazon Web Services will be launching in early 2021 and will enable enterprises to stream both Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality content to both standalone and tethered VR headsets. The initial use-cases for the service will focus on collaboration and visualization but the same service could serve as a backbone for a future consumer-facing XR streaming service. The CloudXR service is capable of streaming any OpenVR/SteamVR content to users on Android or Windows systems without the need for any special modifications to the streamed application.


Earlier this year, Nvidia released an SDK that makes it possible for companies to deploy CloudXR service on Nvidia’s own servers. The company has now introduced a ready-made CloudXR service for the Amazon Web Services which will allow users to stream high-quality immersive experiences to remote AR and VR devices. Nvidia used two examples to show how CloudXR is already being used over the AWS.


The Amazon Web Services (AWS) is one of the most widely used cloud computing platforms in the world. It is used as the back-end web infrastructure for millions of clients across the globe. By opting to provide the CloudXR via the AWS, Nvidia wants to allow any company to easily spin up their own XR streaming solution to suit their various needs.


CloudXR is being pitched up for enterprise use-cases that will make it possible for companies stream high-quality Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality content to the headsets of their employees without the need to provide every user with a powerful headset and VR-ready PC. With the heavy-duty rendering happening in the cloud, CloudXR is aiming to run high-fidelity Virtual Reality content low-powered PCs, laptops as well as standalone headsets such as Vive Focus and Oculus Quest.


While the enterprise XR applications will form its initial use-case, the move takes the industry closer to a consumer cloud-streaming XR service. If a company wishes to offer consumers such a service, they could theoretically develop their platform on top of a CloudXR hosted in the Amazon Web Services.

The streaming of XR content from the cloud has been with us for quite some time now but Nvidia’s CloudXR offers the most scalable and mature solution at the moment thanks to its compatibility with OpenVR/SteamVR content as well as its imminent deployability via AWS.
