This week the folks at Intel revealed their latest RealSense camera tech, a model by the name of RealSense Depth Camera D435i. This is the sort of camera you use to add depth sensing and tracking capabilities to all manner of devices. This latest version of the camera from Intel adds the all-important inertial measurement unit (IMU) that brings a whole new dimension to the data provided to the end user.
The hardware looks quite similar to its predecessors – this isn’t the sort of camera you buy to look like you’ve bought something new. Instead, the new tech comes sort of low-key. But don’t let that fool you – this new version of the camera has the ability to bring the unit into the world of 6DoF fully. With this newest version, the device not only keeps its vision – it’ll remember its position in 3D space.
“Intel RealSense technology is used to build products that enrich people’s lives through devices and machines that perceive the world in 3D,” said Sagi Ben Moshe, vice president and general manager, Intel RealSense Group. “With the addition of the IMU, the RealSense D435i enables developers to tackle a new set of challenges related to tracking movement and depth.”
According to Intel, this newest camera makes the following specific use-cases a reality:
- Navigation and stabilization for drones and other unmanned systems and robotics
- Orientation for tracking in fitness and robotics
- Motion detectors and gesture recognition for gaming and robotics
- Rotational tracking for augmented reality and virtual reality head-mounted devices
This newest unit comes in the same 90 mm x 25 mm x 25 mm hardware as the original Intel RealSense D435 Depth Camera. This allows end users to integrate this hardware into whatever final product they’re working with without any major hardware adjustments. Users will be able to find the Intel RealSense D435i camera available through Intel right this minute on pre-order. The final product begins shipping on November 26th, 2018.
This camera can be found at the Intel store where it’ll be available for approximately $200 USD.
