Magic Leap project is Porg meets Tamagotchi

A new mixed reality experience from Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB for the Magic Leap headset will let Star Wars fans raise their own Porg, the lovable alien birds from Star Wars: The Last JediProject Porg follows in the footsteps of virtual pet sims like Tamagotchi and Nintendogs, asking you to care for, feed, and play with digital Porgs.

In the debut trailer for Project Porg, we learn about the pet sim’s setup: Chewbacca has left you with an unspecified device, along with a Porg, and a message from C3-PO, who informs you how to care for the Porg and its eventual offspring.

ILMxLAB creators explain that feeding and nurturing the Porg is designed to be like taking care of any other pet. Vicki Dobbs Beck, executive in charge at ILMxLAB, says that players will be able to take their virtual Porg “to public locations, possibly even a place like a theme park.” Disney plans to open a new Star Wars-themed attraction, known as Galaxy’s Edge, at Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida later this year.

Star Wars: Project Porg was originally announced at Magic Leap’s LEAP conference in October. ILMxLAB has experimented with the world of Star Wars in Unreal Engine and virtual reality, and is developing an episodic VR series known as Vader Immortal for Oculus Rift.
