Today, we’d like to introduce you to a special project called ‘Sarotis’ by Interactive Architecture Lab. Sarotis is a project that looks beyond mobile phones into advanced vision technologies which connects directly to the body through their soft synthetic interfaces.

Interactive Architecture Lab has been exploring ways in which technology can change how we see and interact with the world around us. And their answer lies with Sarotis where advanced vision systems and sensor technologies are connected directly to the body.

In the video below, we see a series of technical experiments into Sarotis where these prosthesis amplifies users’ awareness of space. Using live 3D scanning technology, they can control the inflation and deflation of their soft robotic wearable.

The experiment conducted by Interactive Architecture Lab revealed that Sarotis can possibly be used by people with visual impairments. It also revealed the “possibility of constructing virtual spaces” within a physical space that could be sensed through Sarotis, according to their team.

Sarotis can also be used for navigating the virtual and augmented worlds where it provides haptic feedback, improving the immersive state and environment. Currently, there are many solutions out there but not to the extent in which Interactive Architecture Lab has created with Sarotis.

“To express the Sarotis vision of future soft wearable technologies, a speculative film provokes us to consider how fluidic hydrogel interfaces may dissolve the distinction between our own physiology and that of the softening machines that will extend our bodies,” said the team.

Having that extra layer of “touch” and “feedback” really does improve how we interact with the virtual world. That’s why companies such as HaptoTeslasuit, and VRGluv have all launched their own unique products to better improve our virtual experiences. What are your thoughts on Sarotis and would you like to use it in the future? Check out their case study.
