Pico Goblin VR Headset Ditches The Wires

With the HTC Vive going wireless and Oculus working on its Santa Cruzproject, VR headsets are becoming slowly untethered. Pico is set to join the party as well with the Goblin.


The standalone setup is set to debut at E3 next month and follows on from thePico Neo CV headset we tried out at CES back in January packing in many of the same features.


The Goblin is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with two 70Hz displays also combining to produce a 2.5K resolution screen. One of the more notable features though, is the addition of three-degrees-of-freedom (3DoF) head tracking technology, which means you'll be able to roam freely and use a motion controller to navigate within the virtual realm.


"We created the Pico Goblin to liberate people from clunky VR technology," said Ennin Huang, vice president of design at Pico.


"There's no complex technical set-ups, attached wires or need for a phone. We want to make the barriers to entry for completely standalone VR headsets as low as possible, while offering flexible options for users."


The Goblin, the company says, will allow for instant access to VR games, apps and videos, while also adding a portable element through its design. When we spoke to Pico back in January it said it was launching its own dedicated apps store and working with developers to get software prepped for the platform.


In terms of pricing and and when it's going to be available, we don't have any details on that front yet. Huang's indication that the Goblin will be available for an "affordable price" is a pretty clear hint that it's going to be cheaper than what it will cost to pick up and Oculus Rift or a HTC Vive instead.
