Magic Leap Launches Spatially Aware Spotify AR App

Augmented reality startup Magic Leap made a lot of noise in April when it raised $280 million from Japan-based telco NTT DoCoMo.

That cash injection was in addition to $2.3bn it had already raised, and according to reports from Variety and other news outlets yesterday (November 12), the company is now raising a Series E funding round.

Today (November 13), the company is releasing what it says is the ‘streaming sector’s first foray into spatial listening’ – an augmented reality Spotify App.

Spotify is the first major music service to launch on Magic Leap.

Through this app, Spotify Premium users can access and control their music, while using Spotify on their mobile, desktop, or tablet to control the audio on a Magic Leap One Creator Edition device.

With an all-new interface, the app places three-dimensional content from Spotify in your real-world environment.

The app also allows users to create location-aware playlists for specific rooms.

This means that, as you move from room-to-room in your home while wearing a Magic Leap device, Spotify will note your location and play an assigned playlist for that room.

“THE APP IS SPATIALLY AWARE, SO YOU CAN PIN RECENTLY PLAYED ARTISTS, ALBUMS OR TRACKS TO SPECIFIC LOCATIONS IN YOUR HOME.”

Writing in a blog post today, the company said: “The app is spatially aware, so you can pin recently played artists, albums or tracks to specific locations in your home.

“And because content builds over time, you can collect and curate the perfect playlists or soundscape for each room in your space.

“Share your sofa with up-and-coming bands, meet your idols in your kitchen, explore new albums in your garage.”
