Avicii's upcoming posthumous album Tim will receive a special world premiere as a virtual reality experience, courtesy of consumer-facing VR leader Oculus.
Born Tim Bergling, the 28-year-old artist took his own life in April of last year, but his music and message continue to touch fans around the world. When he passed, Bergling was in the process of writing and recording his third studio album, and with the help of some of this closest collaborators, that album is due for release Thursday, June 6.
While specifics about the experience are fuzzy, Billboard has confirmed that the Tim premiere will run every hour on the hour, each song of the album set to its own 360-degree visualizer. The premiere event will be accessible to everyone with an Oculus Go or Gear VR in the Oculus Venues arena Thursday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. PST.
“In my time working with Tim, we’d always discussed how important the VR takeover would be and the endless shifts in thinking we would all have, from music videos to live music and -- most importantly -- tweaking the album experience,” Geffen Records president Neil Jacobson is quoted in Oculus' blog. “The music album is in a challenged place right now, and VR can be a vehicle to bring that format into its next iteration. To a small degree, we are playing with that idea in this Tim virtual reality album listening experience.”
