Sound Of VR #2: Laurie Anderson - O Superman
November 22, 2016

Rising to #2 on the UK Single Charts in 1981, Laurie Anderson made the least expected hit with 'O Superman', an atmospheric music creation that was originally part of a broader performance art piece, 'United States Live'. There is something infectious about the song - maybe because of its trance-state inducive, repetitive "Ha" syllable (a C note) created by looping with Eventide Harmonizer, and acting as a hypnotic pedal point.

The text of "O Superman" is spoken through a vocoder, and the lyrics sound surprisingly ahead of their time - was Laurie thinking of the Matrix?

..."Hello? This is your Mother. Are you there? Are you coming home? Hello? Is anybody home?"...

..."Hi Mom! So hold me, Mom, in your long arms. In your automatic arms. Your electronic arms."...
