Performance artist Marina Abramović will unveil her first virtual reality piece as part of London’s annual Art Night scheme in June.

Rising (2018), which addresses climate change by immersing viewers in the effects of rising sea levels, will be on display at Everyman King’s Cross.

Dozens of events are set to take place along the length of Walthamstow market and in King’s Cross on June 22 and 23, when a polish deli, a fishmongers shop and a late night internet cafe will be transformed into impromptu galleries.

Among further planned events are “a participatory karaoke project” where visitors to a local pub will be asked to keep a continuous performance of Stay Another Day by local boy band East 17 going all night.

Sam Hunt, Creative Director of Waltham Forest’s London Borough of Culture programme , said the event was “a real snapshot into the best of London’s contemporary visual arts scene”.

He said: “This year it has the added bonus of having a real focus on artists and organisations from Waltham Forest. We are proud to be hosting Art Night as a key event within the first ever London Borough of Culture and are delighted that so many talented artists from the borough are involved in what will undoubtedly be a highlight of the year.”
