Recommended Oculus Rift Room Scale Setup

You want room scale, but you purchased the Oculus Rift, and you are jealous of your Vive room scale friends? Never fear, Oculus are here to help. Or at least, so they say since the feature is still marked experimental.

In a recent Oculus blog post, the Oculus folks have written a guide to get the best out of three sensors to attain room scale.

How many sensors do I need?

When you purchase the Rift, you get one sensor. Once you buy the Touch controllers, you get another. But if you want room scale then you need to purchase separately a third controller.

Where to I place my sensors?

There are many ways to place your sensors, and it is very much a trial and error type of setup. Oculus state that each sensor has good tracking up to 8 feet, then trailing off to no tracking at 10 feet. The recommended configuration from Oculus is to mount three sensors directly in the corners of your room, about eight feet high, facing downward at a 45-degree angle toward the center of your play area, as shown in the following diagrams:

From my experience with a 10x10 foot room. Two sensors fail when I turn around. You need that third sensor to get to room scale.
