Football is loved all over. Some parts of the world have such a strong passion, it’s their favorite past time. But how does one translate the love of the sport into Virtual Reality? You get Cherry Pop Games the makers of Sportsbar VR, ask them to take this idea, to take that penalty kick and score with VRFC Virtual Reality Football Club for the PlayStation VR and I can say Virtual Reality Football (Soccer for the states) works and is fun.
One might wonder how one might actually run in VRFC Virtual Reality Football Club? With your hands of course. I know your thinking…what? At first, I too thought this was a crazy concept and in VR and I can say I was glad to be proven otherwise. So grab both Move Controllers, stand up, head to the field and start training. Yes, both Move Controllers are required here as you will be swinging your arms back and forth in a running motion.
At first, it’s a little strange, but like I mentioned it works and when you start to get used to it, this is where the drive starts. With the Move Controllers you will be able to turn, kick, pass your way to victory. But what about the headshots. Don’t worry, Cherry Pop Games made the hopeful even more glorious. You control headshots with your actual head. I know something that would make the most sense and it’s actually in the game. Great job and thank you Cherry Pop Games…great job.
I am going to say this and please just go with what I am saying. Do the training. No matter how awesome you may be at games or sports in real life, do the training all the way through. Because of this may be a game and this may be a sport, but this a sports game in Virtual Reality. So what you think you may know what you thought you would expect needs to be put to the side. With that said, let’s continue.
In training, you will learn how to sprint, score, shoot, pass, turn and everything else you will need to become the star athlete you have always hoped to become. But the one thing the training will not prepare you for is the fun online gameplay (more about this in a minute). How fast you move is determined by how fast you will be swinging your arms for the most part.
The buttons on the Move Controllers you will allow you to snap the ball, pass the ball, quick turns and strafe. Since the left and right Move Controllers act as your feet, you will be turning them in a way when you shoot, kind of like in real life. Like I mentioned, you will need to get used to the controls, but when you do, they just work.
Now let’s talk about gameplay and why if you are looking to have an online sports game in VR, you will want to have VRFC Virtual Reality Football Club in your library of PlayStation VR games. The online multiplayer. When I heard that VRFC Virtual Reality Football Club was going to be online, I grinned. But when I heard it was going to be cross-platform online play with Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, I smiled. There is something about online play in Virtual Reality. It’s a different mindset. There is no bashing…there is no feeling bad because you are the new player (at least none that I have ever experienced) and I am glad…no very happy that Cherry Pop Games has brought the same level of fun as they did with Sports Bar VR, added cross-platform play, and everyone just has an amazing time.
Online play is up to 8 players, but the goalie is AI controlled. The game does have built-in voice chat, so be prepared to have fun while chatting. Now one thing I do appreciate is the different options that are available. From ‘Follow the Ball’ to ‘Freely Move’ to others. Now depending on how comfortable you are in VR is going to depend on what option you will select. If your motion doesn’t bother you, go with ‘Follow the Ball’ or feel free to move around without any restraints or click and turn, it’s really up to you and that is the beauty of this. Fun your way.
Sound wise you will get what you expect. From the roaring of the crowds to the sounds of the ball being kicked. Honestly, I was having too much fun playing online and chatting with others to really pay attention to the other sounds. Well, other when I scored and I just stopped, told everyone to hold on so I can bask in my glorious shot.
Graphically speaking, VRFC Virtual Reality Football Club does not need to have all the bells and whistles for graphics. We are playing Virtual Reality Football (Soccer) here. It does what it needs to do. Honestly, I would rather have a more fun online experience and laughing in VR than seeing a high detailed ad.
VRFC Virtual Reality Football Club has a lot going for it. You have the ability to create and join private matches, offline training, global leaderboards, and online crossplay. The only thing I would love to have been more of is the single player portion. But since the focus is multiplayer and where you will spend a majority of time on the field, it just would have have been nice to have more in the single-player department. But good news, that is being worked on.
It is nice to see the love for a project from a team such as Cherry Pop Games and bring that passion and love they have for Virtual Reality come through and allow us to see and experience it in such such a way. But I did notice something after I started playing online and it hit me. What if we were not the ones playing football at all, but actually the ones being played and controlled as part of a Virtual Reality Foosball game? Just makes you think what will happen next in Virtual Reality.
