Syren, A VR Horror Game Ft. Killer Mermaids

Hammerhead recently announced a new survival-horror game designed for virtual reality headsets called Syren. The game sees players in a lab where some bizarre experiments have escaped and are roaming the futuristic hallways of a secret laboratory.

The visual art-style is very reminiscent of the movies Deep Space 6 or Leviathan; those old classic horror films centered around monsters, labs and retro futurism.

There are some weird and cool segments featured in the new trailer for Syren, where it looks as if players will be facing off against killer mermaids. Yes, killer mermaids. You can check out the trailer below.

The designs of the levels look pretty good. The lab looks fully realized and the environments show a lot of tender, love and care being put into them by the artists. The enemies you face off against are difficult to see but a lot of it will be based on how well the encounters are paced and if they’re used sparingly.

Gameplay consists of a mixture of point-and-click gameplay with first-person shooting. Unfortunately Syren uses the awful disembodied hand technique for interactivity, which means that you’ll see a hand floating around whenever you have to interact with the environment or fire a weapon. Personally, it’s immersion-breaking seeing a floating hand fly around the screen like that, but some people may not mind.

The game looks like it has a lot of potential. A solid mix of puzzle-solving and first-person shooting (done in moderation, of course) could make it a worthwhile experience.

They don’t have a solid release date on Syren but they mention that the game is releasing soon for the PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, so at least we know that the game is coming to both PC and PS4. You can learn more about Syren by hitting up the official Hammerhead VR website.
