Unlike RE7, Resident Evil 2 won't allow you to play in VR—but there's a good reason for that.
Of the many modern updates included in the upcoming Resident Evil 2 remake, support for virtual reality headsets won’t be one of them.
In a recent interview with Daily Star, Capcom producers Tsuyoshi Kanda and Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed that a VR option will not be available in the survival horror game, despite the series’ latest entry, Resident Evil 7, offering one.
According to Kanda, due to Resident Evil 2‘s camera perspective, VR “didn’t match the vision” for the game. “We’re not thinking about VR support currently, given that the camera perspective and the over-the-shoulder choice would mean that VR is not the best way to present the game,” he said.
Unlike Resident Evil 7‘s first-person perspective, the upcoming remake will utilize the same fluid third-person over-the-shoulder camera that debuted in the series with Resident Evil 4. While VR not working well with a third-person perspective makes sense, it didn’t stop players from believing Capcom would still have support for the feature.
Due to the odd first-person perspective (from what turned out to be a rat) in the game’s E3 trailer, many hoped it was a tease that VR support would be included, either at launch or as an add-on feature. “Thinking about it, maybe giving you the rat’s eye view in the trailer might have given people the wrong idea,” Hirabayashi said. “But if you think there is rat VR coming, that’s not the case.”
While this may not be the news many fans were hoping to hear, there are plenty of other features that will bring Resident Evil 2 into the modern era. For one, the remake will use an adaptive difficulty setting to keep even the best players on their toes. Plus, Capcom has teased that the campaigns for Leon and Claire will offer a deeper narrative experience than the original.
Resident Evil 2 will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on January 25th, 2019.
