The review embargo for PlayStation VR has lifted and most seem to have favorable views about Sony’s new VR peripheral. The virtual reality headset is being released witha slew of games that showcase the various aspects of the technology. It is still too early to tell which one of these titles will be the headset’s killer app, but I think we may have just found a contender in Pixel Junk’s Dead Hungry.
This is normally the part where I give you a summary of what the game is about. Instead, I’m going to show you the game’s official description from Pixel Junk as it really is quite brilliant.
Players will take on the role of an intrepid food truck cook, tasked with saving the souls of the undead with blessed burgers, fries of the faithful, pious pizzas, and sublime sodas! You’ll be rewarded for originality, but if you fail to meet the minimum flavor requirements or take too long, BEWARE the consequences!
In most games, you have to kill every zombie that comes near you. In Dead Hungry, you have to save them. It’s a neat twist that helps the game stand out. Yes, playing a game where you flip burgers may seem original as well, but there have been similar games released in the past. Still, combining a food serving simulator with a zombie game is a rather novel idea.
While Dead Hungry may not end up being the one VR game to rule them all, it is still a very fun looking title. As I said in a previous post, PSVR could be the last hope for virtual reality gaming. Casual games like Dead Hungry along with core experiences likeRIGS should help cater to the various audiences that are interested in this form of gaming. Right now, things are looking good for PSVR but we’ll have a better understanding of how successful this peripheral will be by early next year after the honeymoon period is over.
