The 29th edition of Sunny Side of the Doc, hosted with the motto "Culture in Motion," was as rich and diverse as ever. From 25 to 28 June, the four-day La Rochelle-based international marketplace welcomed 2,000 professionals, including 305 international decision-makers and 120 representatives of culture and heritage sites. Producers, distributors, and broadcasters representing 60 countries attended the event, while 480 companies exhibited at 110 market stands. For the organisers, Sunny Side truly secured its position as a leading international linear and interactive documentary marketplace event, promoting both co-production and co-financing agreements.
Yves Jeanneau, founder and CEO, was pleased to observe that the documentary professionals in attendance this year came for a longer period of time, which was reflected by increasingly intensive networking, rich and dynamic debates on current issues affecting the sector, and of course, numerous agreements and partnerships.
The second edition of the PiXii innovation area has already become a crucial component of Sunny Side. The professionals who stepped into this space last year did so out of curiosity. This year, they came back in greater numbers, in order to engage with virtual reality, augmented reality and spatial sound experience developers, and to discuss potential collaborations and co-productions. Many broadcasters (ARTE, France Télévisions, Téléfilm Canada...) took an active part in this new, key innovation hub, which shows that the classic definition of documentary content has indeed evolved and is no longer limited to an approach focused on TV screens and cinemas.
The prizes handed out on the last day for each of the six pitching sessions, organised by subject, rewarded projects covering an impressive variety of themes.
