November 7, 2016

Virtual reality is still barely new in today's technology but it continuously evolves when it comes to its use and features. Its first inception was in video games and then moved on to movies. The 360 degree experience gives users the feel of being in the same environment as the characters of the movie or video games.

Now, students from Georgia experimented with virtual reality for a particular movie genre. The fruit of that experiment is the premiere of the first ever Virtual Reality musical. During the Savannah College of Art and Design invited 116 people from different programs to create "Say It With Music."

Students who major in film, television, animation, motion media, entertainment design, production design, dramatic writing, visual effects and even costume design, were invited to join the initiative lead by the Collaborative Learning Center. It allowed the students to interact with industry professionals in the CLC. In that way, they were able to get their hands on real-world problems. One such example, students create ad campaigns and user experience plans for NASA and BMW.

The students involved in "Say It With Music" set up five Sony PXW-FS7 Super 35 cameras and six GoPros to capture every shot and angle on the set. The music itself was inspired by a composition from Irving Berlin of the same title.

Imagine being in a restaurant the revolves around the romance between two servers. Users were treated to a 360 degree view and a narrative. VR viewers were also treated to multiple plot lines.

"Say It With Music" is a project that took 20 weeks to create and is a 360 degree musical narrative. The movie was featured during the Savannah Film Festival, cites Campus Technology. In partnership with four different Virtual Reality gear vendors, the movie became part of the Virtual Reality showcase. Users were allowed to see the movie using the VR gears available on site.
