There’s only a few days to go until the major event of the summer. No, not the 2018 World Cup, a little royal wedding involving Prince Harry and ex-Suit’s actress Meghan Markle. To mark the occasion, ABC News has collaborated with mixed reality (MR) creative agency Trigger on an augmented reality (AR) app.

Available only on the ABC News iOS app, the new AR feature gives the public the opportunity to take photos with a 3D model of the royal carriage and pose next to a Queen’s Guard, then share these with family and friends on social media.

“We wanted to make it possible for users of the ABC app to get the ‘Royal’ treatment, even if their invite to the wedding, like mine, got lost in the mail,” said Jason Yim, CEO and Executive Creative Director of Trigger.  “Augmented reality is the only way people can bring elements of the Royal wedding, across the globe and into their own homes in an almost tactile way. Being able to see a Royal Guard and Carriage life-size in one’s environment, not only encourages social sharing but also deepens the traditional news story. We we’re thrilled to use our team’s expertise to build this AR feature in time for the Royal Wedding.”

The royal AR functionality will launch today but that’s not all ABC News has planned. It’ll be hosting special coverage of the royal wedding featuring an extended edition of Good Morning America (GMA) on Saturday, 19th May (5:00–10:00 a.m. EDT). GMA co-anchor Robin Roberts and World News Tonight anchor David Muir will lead live coverage from Windsor, England.

ABC News and GMA will have special coverage on their digital platforms, including on ABCNews.com and  GoodMorningAmerica.com, mobile apps, social platforms and OTT services on the days leading up to the wedding.
