The D23 Expo finally put a healthy stamp on what was once known (and probably will forever be known) as Star Wars Land. We’ve seen the concept art, in-depth looks at what you can expect to experience at the sprawling theme park, but now, we have an official name, Galaxy’s Edge, and confirmation that the accompanying hotel will be a completely innovative and an entirely immersive experience.
Not only will you choose the light or the dark side when you check into the park, but Disney has gone a step further by allowing guests to participate in what can only be described as the Westworld for superfans of Star Wars. The resort will have windows, but you won’t be seeing the California or Florida sunshine. Instead, images of space will be shown as you walk down futuristic hallways, dressed as a galactic citizen.
Throughout their day, guests will interact with Star Wars characters and will be able to follow various threads that can lead to unique adventures found in the park.
The chairman of the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts division, Bob Chapek explained the details of the park during its D23 panel today. Further information was laid out in a press release from Disney:
“It’s unlike anything that exists today. From the second you arrive, you will become a part of a Star Wars story! You’ll immediately become a citizen of the galaxy and experience all that entails, including dressing up in the proper attire. Once you leave Earth, you will discover a starship alive with characters, stories, and adventures that unfold all around you. It is 100 percent immersive, and the story will touch every single minute of your day, and it will culminate in a unique journey for every person who visits.”
That seems like quite the promise. It’s almost as if guests will be able to live in their own choose your own adventure, or real-life Knights of the Old Republic. The only issue will be a typical theme in the Star Wars universe — family. What happens when the clan is split on which side of the force they want to join? And considering the massive scale of the park, you have to hope there will be an adults-only a wretched hive of scum and villainy where you can knock back a few.
