Cards on the table time: Truth be told, I’m kind of a wimp. Jump out of an airplane? Nah, thanks. I’m good. Too scary. I’ll just stay here on earth. But just because I’m too scared to jump out of an airplane doesn’t mean I don’t wonder what it would feel like to jump out of an airplane.
Enter VRtually There, a weekly video series from the USA TODAYnetwork. Using some of the latest state-of-the-art virtual reality technology, they’re giving us a 360 degree first-hand look at how it feels to parachute with the US Army’s Golden Knights.
Look away now if you’re afraid of heights, because it begins with what might be the most terrifying moment of all: The moment the your feet are dangling over the edge, above it all, waiting for what seems like an eternity before they get the go-ahead.
And we’re off. No turning back now.
Here they are, still above the clouds, barreling down to earth at speeds that at times approach 120 mph.
And then, as they move closer to the ground, the parachute deploys and the land safely. “It’s soothing,” says the narrator, bringing a new definition to the word soothing.
Anyway, check out the full video below, which also includes some equally cool footage from the US Open of Surfing.
