It’s been an odd half-year or so for Oculus founder Palmer Luckey. After admitting last September that he’d funded a pro-Donald Trump group dedicated to “shitposting in real life,” he became something of a liability for Oculus’ parent company Facebook. He apologized for “negatively impacting the perception of Oculus,” dropped out of the public eye, and eventually parted ways with the social network this March. (A recent report found he also donated $100,000 to President Trump’s inaugural celebrations.) But now he’s back — with some exciting new facial hair and nothing else significant about his appearance.

Luckey is on holiday in Japan, where he’s visiting a VR festival (a spinoff from Anime convention Machi Asobi) in the rural city of Tokushima. He’s apparently touring the sights with his girlfriend, and the pair have been spotted by a number of fans. Here’s Luckey striking a pose with a well-wisher:

Eagle-eyed readers will also notice Luckey has decided to indulge in a bit of cosplay (specifically, Quiet from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, who wears a bikini because she breathes through her skin), but we don’t think that should distract from the obvious time and effort that went into cultivating his new facial fuzz.

Update May 5th, 6AM ET: Luckey chimes in:
