North America’s largest, and one of the world’s most important, the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) recently announced selections being screened in the official competition from September 26–30, 2018. New this year, the OIAF is adding a category for virtual reality artworks.
There were 100 films selected for competition from a record-setting 2,469 entries from more than 20 countries. Canadian animation has a strong presence with 16 films, and so does Ottawa, repped by Pixie Cram whose new work Emergency Broadcast is being screened at the Festival.
Pixie Cram’s mixed media art, films and animations have screened at festivals across Canada, the United States, and in Europe, yet the OIAF selection is a monumental achievement. Top studios—Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney, Pixar—and independent artists from around the world submit to the Festival, and with such a high level of competition, the OIAF jury does not go out of their way to program token locals. There are no bonus points for Ottawa-based artists. Emergency Broadcast has been selected for the Canadian Panorama program and will be shown alongside the best new work created in Canada this year.
Other highlights this year include an episode of cult hit Rick and Morty, directed by Matt Taylor, plus a commercial by Emmy Award-winning animation and director JJ Sedelmaier, known for his work on SNL and The Colbert Report. There’s also Ce Magnifique Gâteau (The Magnificent Cake) by Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels, which screened at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
