King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword Comes To FMX

Organizers of the FMX International Conference on Animation, Effects, VR, Games and Transmedia running May 2-5 in Stuttgart, Germany, have announced that Anne Kolbe, Senior Vice President of Visual Effects at Warner Bros. Pictures, will bring Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword to FMX ahead of its release.

Other highlights include director Saschka Unseld’s VR experience Dear Angelica, Framestore’s work on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Filmakademie alumnus Volker Engel, who will spotlight his sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence.

 

Effects from King Arthur to The Walking Dead

Anne Kolbe, the Senior Vice President of Visual Effects at Warner Bros. Pictures, accompanies VFX Supervisor Nick Davis, who will elaborate on the creation of the medieval epos King Arthur: Legend of the Sword that will be released one week after FMX has closed its doors. Christian Manz (Framestore) talks Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg alumnus Volker Engel – who won an Oscar for his VFX work on Independence Day in 1997 – spotlights the sequel Independence Day: Resurgence. On the TV series front, Thilo Ewers (Pixomondo) provides insights into The Walking Dead.

 

Dear Angelica and Further VR Highlights: Directing & Designing in VR

Dear Angelica, which was directed by the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg alumnus Saschka Unseld, will be the subject of Max Planck’s presentation at FMX. He speaks about Quill, Oculus Story Studio’s VR illustration tool that lets users paint in virtual reality. Also on-board is Jessica Brillhart, the principal filmmaker for VR at Google, who works with the latest 360-degree Jump camera technology, and has realized the two VR films World Tour and Resonance. Further speakers, who share their experience of directing in VR, are Tom Burton (BBC) and Solomon Rogers (REWIND), who were involved in the creation of the BBC Home: Spacewalk VR experience that simulates the journey into the void 250 miles above Earth, and Tom Sanocki whose start-up Limitless Inc. enables the user to animate characters directly in VR.

 

Animation Quest for Young Talent

Several FMX events dig into the “Quest for Young Talent” in times of ever-increasing globalization and new borders. Ben Owen (one of us) will host an education panel, inviting experienced experts from the industry as well as seasoned education personnel such as Shelley Page (DreamWorks Animation), David Sproxton (Aardman Animations) or Seth Holladay (Brigham Young University Center for Animation). One of the issues on the table will be the circulation of students after the Brexit.

 

Art Artists Liberated

“Artists Liberated” features two professionals that have been working at influential companies before they decided to dedicate their careers and time mostly to their own art. Andy Lomas (who worked on The Matrix) presents digital art work inspired by morphogenesis, while Daffy (whose work includes the Avengers VR Experience) explains how he went solo.

 

Technology

The “Shaping the User Experience” track schools attendees in the difficulty of making technology accessible to users. Both Celia Hodent (Epic Games) and David Lightbown (Ubisoft) are sharing their knowledge under the guidance of Julien Blervaque (Ubisoft). Christophe Hery (Pixar) brings Sci-Tech Oscar winners Larry Gritz (Sony Pictures Imageworks), Vladimir Koylazov (Chaos Group), Maurice van Swaaij (Blue Sky Studios) and Marcos Fajardo (Solid Angle) to FMX so that they can share their takes on the latest rendering technologies.
