YouTube is again inviting top creators from around the world to create horror videos at its YouTube Spaces studios for Halloween — and this year, it’s adding a virtual-reality twist.
The Google-owned video giant is working with some 100 creators, who over the next several weeks will produce terror-inducing VR videos for their YouTube channels in a partnership with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, the studio behind genre films including “The Purge,” “Ouija,” “Insidious” and “Paranormal Activity.”
YouTubers including Markiplier, PrankVsPrank, Furious Pete, Vitalyzdtv and KrazyRayRay will be part of the scare-fest. The videos are slated to go live between Oct. 20 and Halloween, on the YouTube Spaces page and on the channels of the participating creators.
The videos will be shot using Google’s Jump camera rigs at YouTube Spaces in Los Angeles, London, Tokyo, Berlin, Toronto and New York. Additionally, creators from YouTube Spaces in Paris and Sao Paulo will send select creators to shoot at YouTube Space LA.
All of the four-walled 360-degree sets at YouTube Spaces resemble a hotel room — dubbed “Room 301” — inspired by Blumhouse’s aesthetic and designed in the style of the cities where the productions are taking place. (YouTube Space LA’s Room 301 set is pictured above.) Inside joke: 301 is the notorious view-count number that videos previously paused on as YouTube’s systems verified authenticity of views. CryptTV, a digital horror network that has a strategic partnership with Blumhouse, also is serving as a production adviser.
It’s the fourth year running that YouTube has partnered with Hollywood horror-meisters for Halloween content. The goal: to promote YouTube Spaces as resources for its homegrown talent and expose them to well-known filmmakers and producers (as it did in partnership with Warner Bros. to promote David F. Sandberg’s “Lights Out” horror pic this summer). Previous partners for YouTube Spaces’ horror program included Guillermo del Toro and Legendary Entertainment; Skybound Entertainment, creators of “The Walking Dead”; and the Stan Winston School of Character Arts.
“Our company loves telling scary stories on all platforms so we are excited to partner with YouTube to find out what scares its incredible community the most,” Jason Blum said in a statement. “The most frightening places are actually the ones where you feel safe and secure so it will be a lot of fun to experiment with the eerie hotel rooms YouTube built and see what happens when we turn the camera around on their creators.”
In addition to the individual projects, YouTube Space LA will host to a “mega-collab” video with more than 20 top creators directed by PrankVsPrank’s Jesse Wellens in conjunction with the Big Picture Co., a production company that specializes in VR and 360-degree videos. The collab will serve as the origin story for the global narrative, showing creators receiving a key to Room 301 — which will lead them to experience their worst fears.
YouTubers on tap for the mega-collab include Markiplier, Vitalyzdtv, Galo Frito, Furious Pete, Luba, KrazyRayRay, Seb La Frite, Coby Persin, PC Siqueira, Josh Paler Lin, The Gabbie Show, Jovem Nerd, Hopsin, TechnoBuffalo, Chachi Gonzales, KarenO, Jay & Arya, Rolê Gourmet, LaToyaForever, and Fischer’s.
