Immersive video and virtual reality are certainly on trend. But their more accessible cousin 360 video could prove to have its tipping point sooner than VR. Heading into SXSW, Vimeo has announced it will now support the distribution and monetization of 360 video, with two badass women at the helm — Anjali Sud and Sara Poorsattar.
“Vimeo has always been committed to preserving and delivering the highest quality video and our move into 360 expands our premium video technology solution to 360 filmmakers. Their stories now benefit from our advanced video compression and player customization tools, along with streaming and offline viewing in up to 4K,” said Poorsattar, who heads up product for Vimeo.
Vimeo certainly isn’t the first to optimize for 360 video distribution and viewing. Facebook rolled out a product in April of last year and around the same time Dailymotion, JW Player and Brightcove announced plugins or applications to enable 360 video.
But as a destination for high quality indie formats, Vimeo has always been on the side of the creators, providing the tools and the platform for them to create. Part of being creator-driven means providing the tools in a changing world to keep empowering the talent to develop groundbreaking content.
As Anjali Sud, SVP & GM of Vimeo’s Creator Platform said on the news: “With this launch we hope to usher in a new wave of immersive content that sets the standard for cinematic quality and powerful narratives in a 360 environment. We believe Vimeo creators are the missing piece to taking 360 video from nascent to mainstream.”
