Report indicates that further market growth or VR and AR can be expected.

A new report and infographic released by immersive technology innovation company VR Visions shows that demand for virtual reality (VR) devices remains high, with the expectation of further market growth and a forecast of 1 Billion VR and augmented reality (AR) users by 2020.

The report was compiled by VR Vision, a company that specialises in assisting businesses in deploying VR solutions and taking full advantage of VR and AR. The company acts as a licensed re-seller for HTC Vive and Lenovo, offering professional services and turnkey solutions.

Other recent reports have shown that the market for immersive technology is continuing to grow, with many analysts expecting that investment in AR will soon overtake VR with greater interest in AR being driven by Apple’s ARKit toolset.

The report forecasts that 22.8 million VR and AR headsets will be shipped by 2022. Some of these will be devoted towards use in business areas such as manufacturing, design and quality control. The report indicates that 54% of consumers in the US believe that AR and VR will have benefits in the workplace.

The report also shows that of the currently available VR headsets on the market, the PlayStation VR remains the most in demand, with 51% of respondents indicating a preference for the PlayStation VR. Oculus Rift gained 26% preference while the HTC Vive trailed behind with 14%. At launch the PlayStation VR was met with unprecedented demand, with some store running out of stock and seeing long lines of people wanting to get hold of the devices.

Samsung and Sony were both shown to be performing well in terms of VR and AR headsets shipped during 2018. Samsung shipped 490,000 devices in Q1, going up to 568,000 in Q1, while Sony shipped 429,000 in Q1, going up to 519,000 in Q2.
