During its third-quarter earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that "AR is going to change everything."

At Amazon, that change occurred in the form of a new tool that could truly democratize AR development. At Apple, that change looks to manifest itself in how future iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks are built. At Snapchat, the company is changing its app, but AR remains firmly at the center of the experience.

 

Amazon Simplifies AR App Creation with Sumerian

Amazon Web Services (AWS) opened its re:INVENT developers expo with a bang by launching Amazon Sumerian, a new tool that could become the dominant platform for building cross-platform augmented and virtual reality applications.

 

Available now as a preview, Amazon Sumerian is a web-based editor that promises to give even novice programmers the ability to build AR, VR, and 3D applications for mobile devices, headsets, and even web browsers. Sumerian apps support WebGL and WebVR, which enables it to run in any web browser, as well as ARKit for iOS apps, with ARCore support forthcoming.

 

Apple Gives Us Glimpse of the Future with Patents for See-Through Displays

Based on newly surfaced information, transparent smartphones like those teased in Iron Man 2 and those hand-tracking monitors made famous in Minority Report may eventually end up being "designed by Apple in California."

 

Among a treasure trove of more than 60 patents awarded to Apple by the US Patent and Trademark Office, recently uncovered by Patently Apple, is a patent (US 9,830,844) for a transparent electronic device.

 

Snapchat Unveils App Redesign, but Keeps AR at the Center

On Wednesday, Snap, Inc. unveiled a revamp of its Snapchat app that draws a hard line between content from your friends and content from professional media organizations.

 

However, the new changes, teased during the company's recent third quarter financial results, won't impact the app's camera and augmented reality effects, which will remain at the center of the app. What users will need to get used to is a new interface in which the left panel is devoted to chats and content from friends, with content from publishers, creators, and the Snapchat community presented on the right.

 

With the change, Snapchat is also making an attempt to distance itself from social media companies like Facebook and the "fake news" phenomenon associated with such services by emphasizing personal communication over shared links. This makes the camera, along with AR content that users generate, a key component of the company's path forward.
