In Death: Unchained is an incredible VR archery roguelike game that manages to be the best of both genres: precise and intuitive archery combines with challenging difficulty, all set in a creepy Christian afterlife that has been abandoned by God. The one problem is that it isn't the most accessible of games; people I've introduced it to have bounced off the permadeath elements, or have been too scared at the faceless zombies and hooded monks stalking the procedurally-generated cathedrals.

That's where Siege of Heaven comes in. A new, free DLC for In Death: Unchained, the Oculus Quest and Quest 2 version of the game, Siege in Heaven aims at providing the archery and atmosphere with less of the challenge and intimidation, and it does a very good job at that.

Tasked with defending a gate from a vantage point, Siege of Heaven swaps out the roguelike elements for almost a Tower Defence vibe. The fact the game can survive having its core roguelike mechanics stripped out and still be this engaging is impressive: the archery is just as technical, with headshots, combos, and long-range hits on-target all rewarding you with points to buy upgraded arrows. Explosive traps, slowing force-fields, even auto-targeting, before long you're wracking up the points and effortlessly swapping between special abilities in a way that feels just as smooth and natural as the base game.

According to developer Superbright, one of the goals for Siege of Heaven was to make the game less 'scary'. While this is true – you never have zombies or demonic Crusaders rushing you down in this new mode – it doesn't mean any of the atmosphere that defines the base game has been lost. The aethereal, floating Medieval architecture, gorgeous sound design of wheezing demons and Gregorian chanting, and stellar enemy designs are all fully represented in the new mode. They're just kept at an arm's length.

I'm genuinely shocked Siege of Heaven is a free DLC and not a full spin-off. The amount of content included, and the quality of it, could easily have justified its own price tag, and yet Superbright have just given it away. I've mentioned before that I think In Death: Unchained is the best archery game available for VR right now, and Siege in Heaven comes along and completely justifies that sentiment.

Siege of Heaven is a free content update for In Death: Unchained, available on Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 now. The game also recently received updates to enhance the experience on the Quest 2. The original In Death is available on PC and PlayStation VR.
